Anyone who knows me will expect this post to be filled with criticism for the newly released Microsoft Windows 8. Spoiler alert: you’re probably right.

Like many poeple, I haven’t rushed out to grab a copy. Though prominent sources ( here, here and even here) are already bursting with quite interesting and exhaustive reviews.

Generally reviewers are impressed. Microsoft seems to have taken a huge step forward, with Windows 8 having one of the shortest development times of any previous release. Quotes such as this one from TechRadar are fairly universal:

Windows 8 represents a fundamental shift in the way Windows works and is far more touchscreen-orientated for use on tablets as well as traditional PCs. If you’re completely new to Windows 8 and haven’t used a preview version, we’d recommend you check out our guide to the new features you’ll find in Windows 8 vs Windows 7 and Windows 8: what you’ll need to relearn.

I admit there is no worthwhile change without a few angry users. Consider the businesses world where many organisations continue to run Windows XP (or worse). I can’t imagine W8 taking off quickly in these environments. Plus, vital business software, such as point-of-sale systems, will require upgrades for compatability with W8.

I admire such an impressive and forward thinking gamble – though I can’t shake the feeling that change will come at a great cost.

Like most changes in the world of technology, the ripples “upgrade” will take some time to spread. It will certainly be interesting to watch as competitors follow and attack.

As always, there is one thing for certain… Mac fanboys posting unfair criticism. I guess haters gonna hate eh?
